Washington State Implements New Laws to Safeguard Election Workers and Detect Cyber Attacks

    2024-04-02

With the 2024 campaign season underway, Washington State has introduced new legislation aimed at enhancing security measures for ballot counting and protecting election officials.

These laws have been put in place to combat the growing spread of misinformation and cyber threats that have undermined public confidence in the electoral process.

Protection Against Harassment of Election Officials

One of the new laws increases criminal penalties for harassing election officials, making it a class C felony to threaten them with harm.

Rep. Mari Leavitt spearheaded this initiative with House Bill 1241 to ensure the safety of election workers who play a crucial role in upholding democracy.

Governor Jay Inslee promptly signed this bill into law, emphasizing the severity of threatening election officials.

    Strengthening Cybersecurity Measures

Another significant law, Senate Bill 5843, mandates that each of Washington's 39 counties install an intrusion detection system to monitor their networks for malicious activities constantly.

This move comes in response to some counties' reluctance to use cybersecurity tools to prevent potential hacking attempts. Governor Inslee highlighted the importance of protecting the democratic process amidst rising conspiracy theories and disinformation.

    Enhancing Voter Signature Protections

The third law, Senate Bill 5890, focuses on reducing the rejection of ballots due to signature discrepancies. Provisions have been made to educate voters on resolving such issues and ensuring that their signatures are verified to prevent any disenfranchisement.

State Senator Javier Valdez's bill aims to establish a uniform process for signature verification across all counties by 2026. These legislative efforts are part of Washington's commitment to safeguarding elections and restoring public trust in the electoral process by addressing critical vulnerabilities and threats.
