Internet Access Crisis Looms: Millions of Low-Income Americans Face Disconnect as Bill Stalls

    2024-05-01

As the Affordable Connectivity Program (ACP) faces a shortage of funds, approximately 60 million low-income Americans are in danger of losing internet access.

The ACP was initially established during the COVID-19 pandemic to provide internet access to rural and underserved areas. Despite having bipartisan support, a bill to extend the ACP on Capitol Hill has stalled, threatening the ability of more than 358,000 individuals in Washington state and 54,000 in Idaho to afford internet services after May 1.

Federal Government Awards $16 Million to Washington for Digital Equity Plan

In a separate news, the Washington State Department of Commerce has received a $15.9 million funding grant from the federal government to support the state's digital equity plan.

This funding will be instrumental in expanding access to digital resources and technology, ensuring that all residents have the opportunity to participate in the digital age and benefit from online services.

    • How do you think the potential loss of internet access will impact low-income Americans?
    • Do you believe that more initiatives like the instant rebate program for electric vehicles should be implemented in other states?
