Asylum-seeking refugees from South America and Africa have found temporary shelter at Powell Barnett Park in Seattle's Central District after facing displacement for the past year.

The park now houses hundreds of refugees in blue, orange, and green tents, with hundreds more on the way. These refugees have been moving around King County due to temporary aid running out, leading them to seek refuge in parks and hotels.

Refugee Conditions at Powell Barnett Park

The newly formed encampment at Powell Barnett Park is home to approximately 200 refugees, including many children.

The refugees face language barriers and struggle to find temporary employment to support their families.

They rely heavily on food donations from the community, but the lack of resources leaves families, including young children, without proper sustenance.

    Calls for Aid and Support

Refugee representative Samuel, a refugee from the Democratic Republic of Congo, highlights the need for additional support from local governments to provide housing and meals to the growing number of refugees.

Despite the efforts of mutual aid volunteers providing donations and security, the situation remains dire for the families residing in the encampment.

    Government Responses and Funding

Seattle Mayor Bruce Harrell's office acknowledges the encampment's existence and emphasizes the need for a coordinated response to address the refugees' immediate housing needs.

Funding from King County and the state legislature aims to provide temporary shelter and resources for migrants and asylum seekers, avoiding the cycle of short-term stays in hotels.
