Rising Costs: Puget Sound Energy Customers Hit With New Rate Hike

    2024-05-02

Puget Sound Energy (PSE) customers are facing a new rate increase that took effect recently.

This increase will impact both natural gas and electrical service bills for residential customers. The average monthly bill for electric customers will see a $4.11 increase, while natural gas customers will face a $7.68 bump. These numbers are higher than expected due to various factors, including the rising natural gas prices in the wholesale market.

    Reasons for Rate Increase

Several factors have contributed to the rate increase, with the main one being the growing number of customers participating in the Schedule 129 Low-Income Program.

The funding from this program is running out faster than anticipated, prompting the need for additional funding to meet customer needs.

Despite these changes, the rate hike is not linked to recent legislative acts or PSE's future plans for service costs.

Future Rate Hikes and Customer Support Programs

PSE has submitted a two-year plan to the Washington Utilities and Transportation Commission, which outlines future rate increases for both electric and natural gas services.

If approved, customers can expect further hikes starting in 2025. However, the final rates are subject to the Commission's decision, which may vary from PSE's requests.

The proposed rate increases are driven by the state's climate laws and aim to support clean energy initiatives and improve service reliability for customers. PSE is also introducing programs to assist customers with bill discounts and past-due balances.

    What Are Your Thoughts?

    • What impact will the rate hikes have on your household budget?
    • Do you support PSE's efforts to invest in clean energy projects?
    • How do you feel about the proposed customer support programs?
