Opinion: The Tesla Cybertruck is Super Boring Inside

The Tesla Supertruck looks like something a kid would dream up if they saw Back to the Future too many times, got out a ruler, and attempted to draw a vehicle.

It's all strange pointy lines, inappropriate angles, and shiny stainless steel.

The Cybertruck certainly makes a statement driving down the road. So you'd think it would be equally flashy and interesting inside.

Turns out, no. The interior of the Cybertruck is super boring.

I got to sit it one recently. Stepping up to it is impressive. It's a massive hunk of steel and glass, and the whole thing feels imposing.

But inside, it feels like Marie Kondo's minimalism had a baby with whoever designs prison cells.

There's a boxy center console with a big screen on it.

Some big metal pedals that look like they were cribbed from a GTA 3 arcade game.

    And that's pretty much it.

The seats and the rest of the cabin are dull, as if Tesla spent so much time on the outside of the truck that when they designed the interior, it felt easier just to grab the backseat from a 1990s station wagon and plunk it in there.

Everything feels a bit underdone. A bit cheap.

That's a strange vibe for a car that now costs over $100,000.

The only really cool feature is the steering wheel, which looks like the yoke of a fighter jet. Tesla gets genuine points for uniqueness there.

Other than that, the interior of the Cybertruck just feels kind of... ordinary. Which is weird for a vehicle that's basically a giant Art Deco lantern cruising along the streets.

Maybe that's intentional. Maybe it's supposed to say something about the truck's no-frills attitude to toughness, or its practicality (fewer surfaces mean fewer things to clean when you're done toodling around on mars.)

What it says to me instead, though, is that this is a truck designed for people to see you in, not a truck for you to enjoy.

It's a statement piece (albeit one that can drive up a sheer rock wall.) You're part of Elon Musk's strange, childish vision for the future of taste and design.

In other words, you can pay $100,000 for a truck that will turn heads and evoke subtle whispers of "really?" and "why??" from passersby. But you won't necessarily enjoy sitting in it.
