Gutierrez Distributor is recalling its El Servidor Corp brand ground cinnamon due to potential contamination with elevated levels of lead, the FDA says. The product was distributed to retail stores in New York starting January 14, 2024.

The recall was initiated after the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets (NYSAGM) conducted a sample analysis that revealed high levels of lead in the cinnamon.

Lead exposure, depending on the amount and duration, can affect nearly every bodily system, the EPA says. Prolonged exposure can lead to serious health issues, particularly in children, such as permanent damage to the central nervous system, learning disorders, and developmental defects. In adults, chronic exposure can result in kidney dysfunction, hypertension, and neurocognitive effects.

The product, packaged in a 1.5-ounce clear plastic bag, should not be used. Consumers are advised to return the product to the place of purchase for a full refund. As of now, no illnesses have been reported related to this recall.

The recalled product label features a prominent American flag background with an eagle in the center, which is clutching a serpent and a branch in its talons. The product name, "El Servidor Corp," is displayed in large red and white text at the top, with the phrase "Servir Es Lo Mejor" in smaller text below it.

On the right side, "Canela Molida" is written in bold with "Ground Cinnamon" in smaller text beneath it, along with the net weight of 1.5 oz. There is also a small Christian fish symbol in the upper right corner.

For more information, consumers can contact Gutierrez Distributor at (973) 777-1851, Monday to Friday, from 8 AM to 5 PM EST.
