A homophobic protest reportedly took place in downtown Placerville, California, shocking residents of the normally inclusive California mountain town.

Locals posted photos of the protest on an online discussion forum for the town. In the photos, people wearing masks to conceal their identities stand in front of a church holding signs.

The signs refer to LGBTQ people with derogatory language and insist that they leave Hangtown. The protest appears to have had a religious orientation, as the sign also quotes a Bible verse from the book of Leviticus.

The protest was reportedly in response to an LGBTQ+ game night held at the church. The motive of the protest was likely to intimidate people trying to attend the game night.

Approximately 10 people appear to have attended the protest.

Locals expressed shock that this occurred in Placerville, a community that is normally known for its inclusivity. Residents called the protestors "cowards" for their use of masks to conceal their identity.

Plans for counter-protests are already underway. Join the free Hangtown Herald newsletter so we can keep you posted on this developing story.
