John W. Smith of Walden, passed away on June 29, 2024 at Garnet Health Medical in Middletown, NY. He was 70. John was born on August 11, 1953 in Brooklyn, NY to the late Walter Smith and Becky Brown. He was a Machine Operator for AMPAC in Walden, for several years. He will missed by his family and friends.
Another Hudson Valley, NY Manufacturing Plant Closing; 81 Layoffs
Another 81 New York workers will be laid off this Fall when a Hudson Valley manufacturing plant is officially acquired by another company and moves out of state. It's a news story that seems all too familiar in the Hudson Valley. Since February, hundreds of Hudson Valley factory workers have been laid off in a series of announcements about the mergers, closings or downsizing of businesses operating in New York State.
Cooling centers open amid heat wave
KINGSTON, N.Y. — With temperatures forecast to reach the 90s this week, cooling centers have opened in Kingston and Ellenville. The National Weather Service forecast for Kingston calls for a high of 93 degrees on Tuesday with a chance of scattered thunderstorms. The forecast for Wednesday calls for a high 86 with the chance of thunderstorms increasing.

She was born on Jan 2, 1944 and the only child to the late Abe and Eva Shipman of Goshen, NY. Betty was married to Sebastian Volpe Sr for 25 years. Betty lived 77 years in Middletown NY and moved to Inverness, Fl in 2021. Throughout the years, Betty worked as a hostess at Tony Boffa’s Italian restaurant in Middletown, worked as a store manager at Cumberland Farms, and spent 10 years as a bus monitor at Minisink Valley Schools. Prior to moving to Florida, Betty was a resident of the Devan’s Gate community in Otisville where she made wonderful friends and enjoyed their community gatherings. Betty enjoyed spending time with her family, shopping for everything, and watching endless Hallmark Movies. Betty was a dog lover and over the years loved her German Shepherd, Ace, her Rescue dog, Gracy, and her fierce Chihuahua, Gizmo.

Middletown mourns death of beloved former football coach Dick Wolslayer
MIDDLETOWN – Legendary former Middletown football coach Richard “Dick” Wolslayer has died at the age of 84. Wolslayer was the winningest football coach in school history. He was part of the inaugural 2023 Middletown Wall of Fame class, as one of just seven members, and was the first coach enshrined. A multi-sport field on Monhagen Avenue in the City of Middletown is named after Wolslayer, who was beloved in the community.
