Thornton Township trustees deadlock on paying bills

SOUTH HOLLAND, Ill. — The Thornton Township Board of Trustees did not approve funds at a meeting on Tuesday night for work and services performed for the township.

All of the vendors listed in the general fund and the general assistance fund may not be getting any money for the foreseeable future. Neither of the funds were approved by the trustees. The vote was taken and it was essentially a stalemate.

“Ya’ll wanna give the public a reason why we’re not paying bills tonight?” Thornton Township Supervisor Tiffany Henyard said during the meeting.

It was another night of fireworks in Thornton Township with the in-fighting largely centering on requests for information and arguments over ordinances that some of the trustees want in place.

The ordinances would help regulate how township funds are spent.

“There was plenty of time to be put on the agenda. Obviously, as you see, it was not on the agenda,” trustee Chris Gonzales said.

There were a number of items on the agenda that were not approved, meaning checks will not go out for a number of residents, which Gonzales said he would be happy to get the ball rolling on but needs a collaborative effort from his colleagues.

“Today is Tuesday only, we can get it done. But it takes some cooperation and, like I said at the end of the meeting, it takes leadership, it takes communication,” Gonzales said.

It is unclear how things will move forward. Even if another example was called this week to try and resolve everything, it could result in another tie.
