Disgraced Top Chef Winner Gabe Erales’ Restaurant Bacalar Closes
On Monday, the word went up on Bacalar’s social media: “Exciting changes coming soon!”. Maybe less exciting for Gabe Erales, the executive chef who based the Rainey Street restaurant’s menu on his childhoods spent in the Yucatán Peninsula. Opened in September 2023, Bacalar marked Erales’ first new restaurant since winning Top Chef season 18 in 2021. That moment of triumph was significantly complicated when news broke that Erales had been terminated from then-homebase Comedor for misconduct. In a now-deleted Instagram post, the longtime Austin chef acknowledged he had had an extramarital affair with a Comedor employee and then reduced her work hours, which, Erales conceded at the time, “in combination was a poor judgment call and led to my termination after I filmed Top Chef.”
DPS responds to fatal SUV crash on I-35
WACO, Texas (KWTX) - The Texas Department of Public Safety said they responded to a crash on I-35 near FM-2115 south of Salado that left one person dead. On July 23, around 7:15 a.m., DPS said an SUV traveling northbound hydroplaned, lost control and crashed into a truck tractor that was stopped on the improved shoulder.

Company that supplies Samsung set to build new $46 million facility in Manor
MANOR, Texas — A South Korean company that helps supply Samsung will be building a new $46 million facility in Manor, according to a report from the Austin Business Journal. Plans show the facility will be built on a 24-acre plot along Old Kimbro Road, south of U.S. 290, that Wonik Materials Co. purchased from the city earlier this year.

Floodgates opened upstream as Lake Travis rises
The Lower Colorado River Authority (LCRA) has opened floodgates at two dams upstream from Lake Travis as water levels rise following recent heavy rainfall in Central Texas. As of Wednesday morning, two floodgates were open at Wirtz Dam on Lake LBJ, while five floodgates were operating at Max Starcke Dam on Lake Marble Falls. The water is flowing downstream into Lake Travis, which is expected to rise in the coming days.
