Senator Hawkins Issues Statement on Summer Wildfires
“More air assets and initial attacks are key to addressing Chelan County’s long-term fire risks”. State Senator Brad Hawkins has fielded many calls and emails from residents in recent weeks due to July’s Balsam Root Fire in Wenatchee and the current Pioneer Fire near Lake Chelan. Hawkins said a swift air attack is key to preventing large-scale damage and preserving the air quality and summer tourism season.
Firefighters Battle Against 2 Growing Fires With Hazy Conditions
Firefighters continue the battle today against two big fires burning in the area as they anticipate more gusty winds and hot dry conditions. Highway 12 remains closed from the top of White Pass to Oak Creek as firefighters try and get a handle on the Rimrock/Retreat Fire started Tuesday afternoon on private property in the Rimrock Retreat/Trout Lodge area. The blaze then spread into the forest with the blaze now burning more than 8,000 acres. US Highway 12 remains closed because of downed power lines, trees, and boulders. All evacuation notices remain in place and there's no estimated time when Highway 12 will reopen.
Red Cross Operates Shelters During Busy Fire Season
Residents of Oregon and SW Washington are in the middle of a busy wildfire season as the climate crisis threatens to upend more communities. The American Red Cross Cascades Region opened our first shelter in La Pine on June 25th due to the Darlene 3 Fire and we have not stopped since. We are currently operating in 4 different locations in our region plus we are helping support or neighboring Red Cross regions in Washington, Idaho and Montana.
Colfax Restaurant Incubator Set To Open With Wild Ember Kitchen
After years of work and planning Colfax’s restaurant incubator is ready to open with its first tenant. Wild Ember Kitchen is set to have its grand opening on August 17th inside the old Washington Federal building on Main Street. The Colfax Downtown Association bought the building and remodeled it into a restaurant space. The organization is using funds from a 2.3 million dollar Washington State Department of Commerce grant to develop the restaurant incubator. That grant was allocated in the fall of 2022.
FBI Issues Jugging Warning: Video All Washingtonians Need to See
The FBI has issued a warning of an increasing crime trend called "jugging." Jugging is when a criminal suspect or group targets a customer leaving a bank ATM, or building with a significant amount of cash. Thieves approach victims as they get into their vehicles, or in some cases actually follow the victim as they drive off, to rob them at another location.
Teen arrested for outstanding warrant in Kennewick
KENNEWICK, Wash. - A teen was arrested in Kennewick for an outstanding warrant on Thursday, according to the Kennewick Police Department. KPD reports that the 15-year-old was found in the 2700 block of West Kennewick Avenue near a McDonald's at 4:06 p.m. Officers made contact with the teen who was seen allegedly throwing something into a garbage can.
