An officer shot a man around 7 a.m. Sunday during an altercation in Thousand Oaks, the Ventura County Sheriff's Office reported.

The incident began when sheriff's deputies attempted to make contact with a 37-year-old man who was seen holding a knife, officials said.

"The man advanced towards one of the deputies in a threatening manner with another device that appeared to be a bow and arrow," the sheriff's office said in a news release. "Despite receiving several verbal commands to drop the weapon, the man did not comply and continued to aggressively approach the deputy. As a result, an officer-involved shooting occurred."

Sheriff's Capt. James Sullivan said the incident occurred at the intersection of East Avenida De Los Arboles and Erbes Road in a commercial area and was not at the man's home. The location is just east of Highway 23 in the vicinity of a shopping center.

Deputies rendered aid to the suspect and called for medical personnel, the agency said. The individual was conscious and transported to a local hospital. He was said to remain in critical but stable condition as of Monday morning, according to the sheriff's office.

Sheriff's officials said a knife and another item that looked similar to a bow were recovered at the scene. No deputies were injured during the incident, Sullivan said.

The sheriff’s major crimes unit is investigating the shooting in conjunction with the Ventura County District Attorney’s Office. The deputy involved in the shooting has been placed on administrative leave, which is standard protocol, officials said.

In accordance with state law, footage from officers' body-worn cameras will be released within 45 days.

The sheriff's office contracts with the city of Thousand Oaks for police services.

Anyone with information about the incident may contact Detective Gerardo Cruz at 805-384-4726.
