THOUSAND OAKS, Calif., June 30 (KNN) — A deputy was involved in a shooting that left a man in critical condition after an aggressive encounter on a street in Thousand Oaks early Sunday morning.
Around 6:50 a.m., a deputy from the Thousand Oaks Police Department was involved in a shooting incident on Avenida de los Arboles, west of Erbes Road, according to the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies initially made contact with a “suspicious pedestrian” – a 37-year-old man who was observed holding a knife.
“During the contact, the man advanced towards one of the deputies in a threatening manner with another device that appeared to be a bow and arrow,” said the VCSO in a statement on social media.
“Despite receiving several verbal commands to drop the weapon, the suspect did not comply and continued to aggressively approach the deputy. As a result, an officer-involved shooting occurred.”
It is reported that the deputies rendered aid to the man and called for medical personnel to respond to the scene. The suspect was transported to a local hospital and is reported to be in critical but stable condition.
A knife was recovered at the scene along with another item resembling a bow. No deputies were injured during this incident, the VCSO reported.
A witness stated to KNN off camera that he saw a homeless man having some sort of episode walking down the street prior to the arrival of deputies. After he came back out from getting coffee, he stated he heard deputies fire three shots.
The suspect was reported to have sustained two gunshot wounds to the chest, according to initial information gathered at the scene.
The Sheriff’s Major Crimes Unit is investigating this incident in conjunction with the District Attorney’s Office. The deputy involved in this OIS has been placed on administrative leave. This is standard protocol for the Sheriff’s Office whenever a deputy is involved in an OIS.
If you have any information about the incident please contact Detective Gerardo Cruz at (805) 384-4726.
