    Learn about local Native American history with archaeologist Ken Knapp, July 21

    THREE MILE BAY, N.Y. (WWTI) – A program on local Native American archaeology will be hosted by the Lyme Heritage Center , 1848 Depot Street, Three Mile Bay, on Sunday, July 21, at 2 p.m., attendees are invited to bring items they believe are of Native American origin for evaluation and explanation by archaeologist Ken Knapp, according to a press release from the Lyme Heritage Center.

    Knapp will speak briefly about the history of local Native populations, after which he will evaluate objects brought in by the audience.

    According to the press release, Knapp has been investigating this region’s Native history for over 50 years, specializing in North Country pre-European archaeology. A resident of Clayton, he is the conservator of the Knapp Family Collection Archives and the North Country Archaeology Center located in the Depauville Free Library. The Knapp Family Collection is an archive of local pre-contact Native American archaeology that was founded in 1908 by Knapp’s grandfather.

    The Thousand Islands are an important archaeological site where Indigenous people lived continuously since the retreat of the glaciers, about 12,500 years ago.
