Heavy Rain and Thunderstorms Target Northeast Ohio as Cold Front Approaches

Rounds of rain and thunderstorms expected through midweek, with potential for strong winds and localized flooding.

Marginal risk of severe storms for southern Ohio as rain lingers into Wednesday.

[CLEVELAND] — Issued by the National Weather Service at 4:32 AM EDT on September 24, 2024.

Rain and Thunderstorms to Sweep Across Northeast Ohio Through Wednesday

A slow-moving low-pressure system will bring heavy rain and thunderstorms across Northeast Ohio starting today and continuing into Wednesday. As the system approaches from the Great Lakes, it will drag a warm front northward, leading to widespread showers and embedded thunderstorms, especially south of the I-77 corridor. Some areas may see rainfall totals between 0.1 and 0.3 inches, with localized heavier amounts in strong storms.

Severe Storm Risk Shifts South as Rain Limits Instability

While rain will be widespread, the risk of severe thunderstorms has decreased due to cooler temperatures and extensive cloud cover. However, southwest Ohio remains under a marginal risk for severe weather, with isolated storms capable of producing damaging winds. The Storm Prediction Center has shifted the risk area to align with regions expected to see higher instability levels.

Cooler Weather to Follow as High Pressure Builds In

Rain will taper off Wednesday night as the low-pressure system moves north. A weak cold front will cross the area, bringing drier air and high pressure by Thursday. This will lead to mostly sunny skies and temperatures in the mid-70s for the end of the week. Overnight lows will remain mild, in the upper 50s to low 60s.

Potential Tropical Storm to Bring Uncertainty Late Week

As Potential Tropical Storm Nine makes its way inland from the Gulf Coast, there is still uncertainty about its impact on the Ohio Valley. While current models suggest the storm’s remnants will stay south, moisture could stream into the region, increasing the chance for showers late Thursday into Friday. Residents should stay alert for any changes to the forecast.

Marine and Aviation Concerns for the Great Lakes Region

Boaters on Lake Erie should be cautious, as southeast winds will increase today, leading to choppy waters and possible Small Craft Advisories from Geneva-on-the-Lake to Ripley, NY. Winds will shift to the southwest on Wednesday as the front passes, then turn northeasterly with gusts of 15 to 25 knots expected by the weekend, potentially prompting additional advisories.
