Poll: Michigan Rank & File Teamsters Abandon Democrats in Favor of Trump

Michigan’s Teamsters are breaking ranks with their national leadership, leaning heavily towards former President Donald Trump over Vice President Kamala Harris as the 2024 election season heats up.

In an unexpected shift, Michigan’s rank-and-file Teamsters have thrown their support behind President Donald Trump over Kamala Harris, with an overwhelming 61.7% favoring Trump compared to just 35.2% for Harris, according to a recent internal poll. The news underscores a significant realignment in the political loyalties of a traditionally Democratic stronghold and signals potential trouble for the party’s grip on blue-collar voters in a critical battleground state.

Workers Feel ‘Taken for Granted’ by Democratic Leadership

For decades, Democrats have counted on strong support from organized labor, particularly in industrial states like Michigan. However, this latest development indicates a growing sense of dissatisfaction among union members who feel that the party has failed to champion policies that genuinely benefit workers.

“The Teamsters’ own polling shows exactly what we knew – that rank-and-file Michigan Teamsters are supporting President Trump and his pro-worker policies,” said Victoria LaCivita, Michigan Communications Director for the Trump campaign. “While local chapter leadership refuses to disrupt the status quo, the Michiganders who make up these chapters want strong leadership that will protect their jobs, lower inflation, and support American industries – and that’s President Donald J. Trump.”

The frustration among union members appears to be a continuation of the discontent that swept Trump into the White House in 2016. Back then, his promises to bring back manufacturing jobs and his stance against international trade deals that he argued hurt American workers resonated deeply in places like Michigan. Many believe that Democrats have not done enough to address these concerns, leaving a gap that Trump has been quick to exploit.

Teamsters’ Leadership Remains on the Sidelines

Interestingly, the national leadership of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters has refrained from endorsing any presidential candidate in the 2024 election, a decision that has not been made since 1996. This lack of endorsement is itself a statement, reflecting the internal divisions within the union and a recognition that many members are leaning towards Trump.

This reluctance to back a candidate is seen by some as an indictment of the Democratic Party's current positioning. Critics argue that the party’s leadership has drifted too far from the bread-and-butter issues that matter most to workers, such as job security, healthcare, and labor rights. Meanwhile, Trump’s populist rhetoric, which often frames him as an outsider willing to shake up the establishment, continues to find an audience among union members who feel increasingly alienated from traditional political structures.

    Implications for the 2024 Election

The Teamsters' support for Trump is not isolated. It comes amidst a backdrop of growing union support for his candidacy across the state. Earlier this year, auto workers in Michigan also expressed their preference for Trump over Harris, despite the former vice president's efforts to position herself as a champion of working families.

This trend could have significant implications for the 2024 presidential election. Michigan, with its 15 electoral votes, is a pivotal swing state that both parties are keen to secure. If Trump can consolidate his support among union members, it may provide him with a decisive edge, especially in a state where margins of victory have been razor-thin in recent elections.

A Broader Realignment of Blue-Collar Politics?

The shift in support among Michigan’s Teamsters could be indicative of a broader realignment in American politics. For much of the 20th century, unions were synonymous with Democratic votes. However, as the party has increasingly focused on issues like climate change and social justice, some argue it has lost sight of the economic concerns that are most pressing to working-class voters.

The question now is whether this is a temporary phenomenon driven by Trump’s unique appeal or part of a more lasting change in the political landscape. As more unions like the Teamsters grapple with their members' changing priorities, the outcome of the 2024 election may serve as a bellwether for the future of labor politics in America.
