Georgia Braces for Major Impact as Hurricane Helene Approaches

Georgia faces significant flooding, damaging winds, and potential tornadoes as Hurricane Helene looms.

Hurricane Helene to Bring Severe Weather Across North and Central Georgia

[PEACHTREE CITY] — Issued by the National Weather Service at 5:07 AM EDT on September 26, 2024.

Hurricane Helene is set to bring devastating weather conditions to North and Central Georgia through Friday. The storm, currently west-southwest of the Florida Peninsula, is expected to intensify before making landfall along the Florida Big Bend. With widespread rainfall and strong winds anticipated, Georgia residents are urged to finalize preparations immediately.

Flooding and Damaging Winds Expected Statewide

Significant rainfall, up to 10 inches in some areas, is predicted to lead to major flash flooding and river flooding across Georgia. A Flood Watch is in effect for a vast portion of the state, from Atlanta to the northeast Georgia mountains. Flooding could prompt evacuations and render many roads impassable. The potential for widespread power outages and infrastructure damage is high, particularly in areas with saturated soils and shallow-rooted trees.

Tornado Threat Looms Over East-Central Georgia

Helene’s outer bands may produce short-lived tornadoes, especially in east-central Georgia. The tornado risk will be highest from Thursday evening through early Friday morning. Residents should have a safety plan in place and be ready to act swiftly if warnings are issued.

Tropical Storm Conditions Impacting Atlanta Metro Area

A Tropical Storm Warning remains in effect for DeKalb County, including Decatur. Winds of 20-30 mph with gusts up to 50 mph are expected, posing a risk to vulnerable structures, trees, and power lines. Limited wind damage is anticipated, but residents are advised to secure any lightweight objects and stay indoors during peak wind conditions.

Local Rivers Poised for Moderate Flooding

The Yellow River near Lithonia is forecasted to reach moderate flood levels by Thursday evening, with a crest of 20.5 feet expected Friday. Significant flooding could impact homes along Harmony Hills Drive and Court in DeKalb County, as well as the Lake Capri subdivision in Rockdale County. Residents in these areas should monitor conditions closely and be prepared for possible evacuations.

georgia isn't bracing for much of anything other than a tropical storm. they've only closed our schools for today, so they aren't anticipating anything too bad. even the doctors' offices are open today until 12.
