Middle Tennessee Braces for Heavy Rains and Strong Winds from Hurricane Helene

Flood Watch in effect as tropical moisture from Helene brings soaking rain and gusty winds to Middle Tennessee.

Flood Watch Issued as Helene Approaches with Tropical Moisture

[NASHVILLE] — Issued by the National Weather Service at 1:29 AM CDT on September 26, 2024.

Middle Tennessee is set to experience significant rainfall and gusty winds as Hurricane Helene approaches from the Gulf Coast. The Flood Watch begins tonight and will last through Saturday morning, as the region prepares for heavy rains and potential localized flooding.

Heavy Rain and Gusty Winds Expected Across the Region

A stalled stationary front over the Cumberland Plateau, combined with tropical moisture from Helene, will bring widespread rainfall to the area. The heaviest rains are expected late tonight through Friday evening, with rainfall amounts ranging from 2 to 4 inches. Some areas along the Plateau and in the northwest counties could see even higher totals. Gusty winds of 15-20 mph, with gusts up to 40 mph, are expected, especially for areas east of I-65.

Flood Watch in Effect Through Saturday Morning

With deep tropical moisture streaming into Middle Tennessee, the region is poised to receive significant rainfall. A Flood Watch has been issued for areas including Davidson, Williamson, and Rutherford counties. While river flooding is not currently anticipated due to low water levels, flash flooding in low-lying areas is a concern. Residents should be alert and avoid driving through flooded roads.

Cooler Weather and Drier Conditions Expected Next Week

After Helene moves out of the area this weekend, rainfall will taper off, and the region will see drier conditions. Temperatures will hover around 80 degrees, with a possible cold front bringing cooler overnight lows in the 40s to low 50s by midweek.
