Flood Crisis: Rivers Surge as Virginia and North Carolina Grapple with Aftermath of Helene

Flood warnings continue for several rivers in the region, as rain from Post-Tropical Cyclone Helene causes dangerous conditions.

Flooding Threat Remains for Virginia and North Carolina Despite Calmer Weather

BLACKSBURG — Issued by the National Weather Service at 3:34 AM on September 28, 2024.

Ongoing Flooding and Potential Showers Pose Risk for Weekend Travelers

Flooding remains a major concern across parts of Virginia and North Carolina despite the remnants of Post-Tropical Cyclone Helene being absorbed by a large low-pressure system now situated over western Kentucky. Numerous rivers, including the New, Roanoke, and Dan, continue to experience elevated water levels, with several still rising.

Weekend Weather Brings Partial Relief, But Flood Risks Persist

Although the severe weather has moved out, low-level moisture remains, leading to patchy fog and drizzle in some areas. The upper low will gradually drift eastward, bringing a chance of light rain showers along the Blue Ridge. While any additional rainfall is expected to be light—less than 0.25 inches—it could still impact already saturated areas.

Widespread flooding remains in the North Carolina mountains and southwest Virginia, where many roads have been damaged or closed due to high water. Although no significant rainfall is forecast, floodwaters will continue to pose a threat through the weekend.

Rain and Cooler Temperatures Expected Early Next Week

The remnants of Helene will continue to influence the region into early next week, with additional rain expected on Sunday and Monday. Showers, possibly accompanied by isolated thunderstorms, will be scattered across the area. Highs will remain seasonable, in the mid to upper 70s, with lows in the 60s.

By Wednesday, a cold front will push through the region, bringing an end to the rain and ushering in cooler, drier conditions. High pressure will build, providing a much-needed break from the wet weather for the latter half of the week.

Flight Delays Possible Due to Fog and Low Ceilings

Travelers should be prepared for potential delays at airports, particularly during the morning hours. Fog and low clouds will create LIFR conditions at airports such as Lynchburg (LYH), Lewisburg (LWB), and Danville (DAN). Conditions are expected to improve to VFR levels later in the day.
