Severe Fog and Thunderstorms to Disrupt Tuesday in Southeast Michigan!

Fog early Tuesday followed by afternoon thunderstorms as a cold front brings relief from the heat.

Southeast Michigan faces foggy conditions and thunderstorms Tuesday before cooler and drier air arrives.

[DETROIT] — Issued by the National Weather Service at 7:16 PM EDT on Monday, September 30, 2024.

Fog and Thunderstorms to Impact Southeast Michigan on Tuesday

Residents of Southeast Michigan should prepare for areas of dense fog early Tuesday morning, with some spots experiencing visibility below half a mile. The fog will develop mainly after 8 AM as moisture from Lake Erie moves into the region. Later in the day, a cold front is set to bring showers and thunderstorms, especially in the afternoon, with the highest storm potential from 3 PM to 7 PM.

The cold front, moving from the northwest, will likely trigger short-lived but intense periods of rainfall and potentially thunderstorms. While the storms are not expected to be severe, residents could see gusty winds of 20-25 mph during the afternoon, especially near The Thumb region, where stronger rainfall rates are more likely.

Cooler and Drier Conditions to Arrive by Wednesday

After the passage of the cold front, cooler air will settle over the region, with overnight lows dropping into the 40s by Wednesday morning. Wednesday will bring a significant temperature drop, with daytime highs only reaching the 60s under mostly clear skies. This cooler weather will persist into Thursday, though temperatures will warm slightly as the week progresses.

Windy Conditions on Lake Huron to Follow the Cold Front

For those on Lake Huron, expect northwest winds to pick up behind the cold front on Tuesday afternoon, with gusts up to 30 knots over open waters. Boaters are advised to take caution as Small Craft Advisories are likely for the Thumb region. Winds will moderate by midweek as high pressure settles in.
