Fog or Driving Blind? Morning Commute In Northern Indiana May Be a Challenge!

Dense fog reduces visibility to dangerous levels, impacting early morning commutes.

Residents are urged to exercise caution as fog blankets the region, leading to hazardous driving conditions.

[NORTHERN INDIANA] — Issued by the National Weather Service at 5:00 AM EDT on Tuesday, October 1, 2024.

Dense Fog Advisory in Effect Until 9 AM

Northern Indiana and southwest Michigan are under a Dense Fog Advisory until 9 AM EDT today. The fog is expected to significantly reduce visibility to a quarter mile or less, making driving conditions hazardous across much of the region. Areas most affected include Elkhart, Goshen, Michigan City, South Bend, and Coldwater.

Drivers are urged to slow down, use low beam headlights, and allow extra distance between vehicles. Fog may also pose a risk for children waiting at bus stops in the early morning hours.

High Swim Risk on Lake Michigan Continues

In addition to the fog, a high swim risk is in effect for beaches along Lake Michigan from Benton Harbor to Michigan City. Dangerous waves and currents will create hazardous conditions for swimmers throughout the day on Tuesday. Residents and visitors are advised to stay out of the water until conditions improve.

Patchy Dense Fog to Develop Rapidly Before Daybreak

The National Weather Service is also warning of patchy dense fog developing rapidly before daybreak, especially along a line from Coldwater to Columbia City to Marion. Visibility may drop to near zero in less than 30 minutes in some locations. If traveling early, be prepared for sudden changes in visibility and drive with caution.
