Southwest Michigan city stands out for its vibrant arts scene, affordable living, and forward-thinking community initiatives.

Kalamazoo, MI – September 25, 2024 - Kalamazoo has earned a spot among the top 50 places to live in the United States, according to the 2024 rankings from Money.com. This accolade places the city alongside two other Michigan locations, celebrated for their unique combination of affordability, culture, and community-driven growth.

Kalamazoo’s charm lies in its ability to appeal to diverse demographics, from college students and young professionals to families and retirees. The city's vibrant arts scene, affordability, and inclusive community programs were key factors that helped it stand out.

A City Rooted in Arts and Craftsmanship

Kalamazoo’s quirky, eclectic vibe is deeply tied to its arts community. The Kalamazoo Institute of the Arts showcases a significant collection of 20th-century American art, while local hubs like the Book Arts Center and Glass Art Kalamazoo offer hands-on workshops in traditional crafts like papermaking, calligraphy, and glassblowing. Events such as Vintage in the Zoo—a popular seasonal gathering featuring artisan goods—highlight the city’s commitment to preserving and promoting craft culture.

Craftsmanship extends beyond the arts. Kalamazoo is home to Bell's Brewery, Michigan’s oldest craft brewery, alongside a growing number of new, innovative breweries such as Brewery Outré and Brite Eyes Brewing Co., adding depth to the local beer scene.

Education and Equity at the Forefront

In addition to its arts and culture, Kalamazoo has gained national attention for its Kalamazoo Promise, a groundbreaking initiative launched in 2005 that offers free college tuition to graduates of the city's public schools. The program has changed the lives of thousands of students, setting a national example for other municipalities.

Kalamazoo’s emphasis on equity doesn’t stop there. The Northside Association for Community Development has been at the forefront of addressing housing inequality and other long-standing issues in the city’s historically Black neighborhoods. The organization is transforming several blocks into affordable housing and spearheading programs that offer job training and family-focused events.

Affordable Living with Big City Perks

One of the city’s biggest draws is its relatively low cost of living. Housing remains affordable, with abundant options for both renters and buyers. Residents can access an array of cultural and recreational activities without the traffic headaches often found in larger cities. Families and nature lovers can take advantage of the Kalamazoo Nature Center, a sprawling 1,100-acre forest and wetland area perfect for outdoor activities.

In 1959, the City of Kalamazoo established the first downtown pedestrian mall by closing down three blocks of the central business sector on Burdick Street. The concept was designed to reinvigorate downtown Kalamazoo and compete with the growing trend of enclosed suburban malls located distant from the city core.

Kalamazoo has managed to strike the right balance between a laid-back lifestyle and the amenities of a bustling city, making it an attractive option for a variety of residents.
