Another Minnesota Republican legislator was aware of Dotseth's domestic violence history, raising concerns of a cover-up within the party.

ST PAUL — The Minnesota DFL is calling for answers from GOP House leadership after it was revealed that Rep. Bryan Lawrence (R-Princeton) knew about Rep. Jeff Dotseth’s arrest for domestic violence years before the case was made public to voters. According to court documents, Lawrence appeared on Dotseth's witness list for a potential trial, which was avoided through a plea agreement.

DFL Demands Transparency from GOP Leadership on Domestic Violence Allegations

DFL Chair Ken Martin expressed outrage over the new information, stating, “Rep. Lawrence owes the public answers about why he was listed as a witness in Dotseth's domestic violence case and what he knew about the incident.” Martin’s statement further questions whether House GOP Leader Lisa Demuth and the Republican Caucus intend to apply the same standards to Dotseth as they have in similar cases involving other lawmakers.

This revelation comes on the heels of growing criticism over the GOP’s handling of the situation. Dotseth’s arrest for domestic assault, which was largely kept under wraps, only became public recently, leading to widespread condemnation from political opponents and activists.

House GOP Remains Silent Amid Growing Scrutiny

When questioned by reporters from the St. Cloud Times, Lawrence did not respond directly, opting instead for a staffer to issue a statement suggesting he would only engage in an "off-the-record conversation"—a move that has only heightened suspicions. Lawrence’s involvement in the case raises ethical questions about whether he was prepared to defend Dotseth's character in court and if his knowledge of the case played a role in how it was handled internally by the GOP.

The DFL is now urging Leader Demuth and other GOP officials to publicly address these concerns and clarify whether Rep. Dotseth will face consequences for his actions, especially in light of the growing public outcry. With Dotseth continuing to serve in the legislature, the Minnesota GOP faces mounting pressure to take a stance on the matter.
