Southern California Boils! Record Heat Wave Could Shatter More Temperature Records

Southern California faces dangerously high temperatures through Thursday. Expect record-breaking heat across valleys, mountains, and coastal areas.

Southern California scorches under high pressure with temperatures reaching dangerous levels, especially inland

LOS ANGELES — Issued by the National Weather Service at 11:59 PM PDT on Tuesday, October 1, 2024.

Southern California Endures Dangerous Heatwave with Record-Breaking Highs

Southern California is under a severe heatwave as strong high pressure continues to drive temperatures to dangerous levels. On Tuesday, several locations broke daily and monthly heat records, including Woodland Hills, where temperatures soared to a scorching 113°F, surpassing the previous record by 3 degrees. The heat is expected to intensify on Wednesday, with additional Excessive Heat Warnings in place for valleys, mountains, and inland coastal areas. Temperatures will range from 1-3 degrees higher across valleys to as much as 10 degrees warmer along the coast.

Residents are urged to take precautions and limit outdoor activity, as dangerously hot conditions are expected to persist through Thursday.

Cooling Expected by Friday but Heat Persists for Inland Areas

While coastal regions might see some cooling by Thursday, especially with the return of onshore flow and possibly a weak eddy circulation, inland areas will continue to experience oppressive heat. A more significant cooling trend is expected by Friday, with temperatures dropping several degrees across both the coast and valleys. However, many valley areas could still see highs approaching 100°F.

Marine Layer Triggers Dense Fog Along Coastal Areas

Coastal areas will see some relief from the intense heat thanks to the marine layer, but dense fog is expected to develop overnight through the early morning hours on Wednesday. The National Weather Service warns of abrupt visibility changes down to one nautical mile or less along coastal waters, particularly impacting areas like the Santa Barbara Channel and Ventura County.

Red Flag Warnings in Place as Fire Danger Intensifies

Red Flag Warnings have been issued across parts of Los Angeles, Ventura, and Santa Barbara counties due to dry offshore winds and high temperatures. The warnings are in effect from 3 AM Wednesday until 8 PM Thursday, with fire danger remaining high across much of the region. Residents in fire-prone areas should remain alert and prepared for possible evacuations.
