Frost Hits Minnesota—But Saturday’s High Temps, Wind and Fire Danger Could Make Things Wierd

Frost covers western and central Minnesota this morning, while gusty winds and fire weather risks return on Saturday with highs near 80°F.

Chilly Start to Friday with Frost, But Fire Weather Risks Loom for Saturday

TWIN CITIES — Issued by the National Weather Service at 2:53 AM CDT on October 4, 2024.

Frost Advisory Continues Across Parts of Minnesota and Wisconsin

A Frost Advisory is in effect for portions of western and central Minnesota and northwestern Wisconsin this morning as temperatures have dropped into the low 30s. The advisory will remain active until 9 AM CDT. Despite the chilly start, conditions will improve throughout the day with temperatures rising into the upper 60s to low 70s under clear skies and light winds.

Fire Weather Concerns Grow as Strong Winds Arrive on Saturday

Saturday will bring an entirely different weather scenario. A shortwave disturbance will push through the Upper Midwest, bringing strong winds and elevated fire weather concerns. Winds from the south/southeast could gust up to 30-40 MPH, especially in southern and western Minnesota, ahead of the cold front.

While cloud cover might reduce some of the gustiness, conditions following the front will be drier, with relative humidity dipping to or below 25% in parts of central Minnesota, particularly near the western counties. With minimal precipitation expected, the risk of fire weather remains elevated, and residents should take precautions.

Weekend Outlook: Breezy Sunday with Cooler Temperatures

Sunday will remain breezy, with winds continuing from the northwest and gusts up to 30 MPH. However, temperatures will dip into the low to mid-60s, providing some respite from Saturday’s near-80°F highs. The dry conditions will persist, with little chance of rain forecasted into next week.

Extended Forecast: Warming Trend Expected Next Week

Looking ahead, a ridge of high pressure is forecast to build over the central U.S., bringing a warming trend to the region. By late next week, temperatures could once again rise above 80°F, extending the period of fire weather concerns. Unfortunately, little to no precipitation is expected through the second week of October.
