Wyoming’s Fire Risk Soars as Winds Hit 50 MPH— Then... A Cold Front Barrels In!

Wyoming faces critical fire weather risks with strong winds and dry conditions through Saturday. A cold front brings cooler temperatures and gusty winds.

Wyoming Braces for Fire Weather as Strong Winds and a Cold Front Push Through

RIVERTON — Issued by the National Weather Service at 1:01 AM MDT on October 4, 2024.

Strong Winds and Dry Air Fuel Critical Fire Weather Conditions

Wyoming is under Red Flag Warnings as critical fire weather conditions take hold, especially across southwestern and central Wyoming. With above average temperatures and gusty winds up to 40-50 mph, fire risks are significantly heightened. The Red Flag Warnings will persist through Saturday evening, with dry air pushing relative humidity values as low as 10-20 percent.

Residents are advised to exercise caution and avoid any outdoor burning as conditions could easily lead to the rapid spread of fires. The National Weather Service urges individuals to stay updated on changing weather conditions, as even stronger gusts are expected following a cold front overnight into Saturday morning.

Cold Front to Bring Cooler Temperatures but Windy Conditions Continue

A cold front will move through late Friday night into early Saturday morning, shifting winds from the southwest to the north. This front is expected to bring slightly cooler temperatures, with highs dropping by 10 degrees on Saturday compared to Friday. Despite the cooler temperatures, the strong winds will persist, particularly in wind-prone areas such as Casper, Rock Springs, and Cody, keeping fire risks elevated through Saturday.

While precipitation chances remain low, a few spots in northwestern Wyoming may see light rain, but no significant impacts are anticipated. Smoky conditions may also worsen, especially with the gusty winds expected to stir up particulate matter.

High Pressure Builds Back In, Warmer and Drier Next Week

After the cold front passes, high pressure will build back over Wyoming by Sunday, bringing light winds and a return to above average temperatures. Dry conditions are expected to dominate the region through next week, with no major weather systems anticipated. The warm and dry pattern will likely continue, further extending fire weather concerns across the region.
