Mayor Andy Schor warns that JD Vance’s opposition to federal funding could jeopardize union jobs at GM's Lansing Grand River plant.

Vance's Stance on $500 Million GM Investment Raises Concerns for Lansing Jobs

LANSING, MILansing Mayor Andy Schor has issued a sharp rebuke to JD Vance following the senator’s refusal to commit to supporting the $500 million federal grant for GM's Lansing Grand River plant. The grant, secured through Vice President Kamala Harris’ tie-breaking vote for the Inflation Reduction Act, is seen as critical to preserving hundreds of good-paying union jobs in the city’s auto manufacturing sector.

“JD Vance is putting hundreds of jobs at risk by refusing to support the investment,” Mayor Schor said. “These grants will ensure Lansing remains a leader in the auto industry, with more opportunities for American workers.”

The $500 million investment is part of a broader effort to boost manufacturing jobs and transition to a greener economy. Vance’s reluctance to endorse the funding contrasts sharply with the Harris administration’s commitment to bolstering U.S. manufacturing, according to Schor.

“This election is a choice between Vice President Harris’ vision of investing in workers and building an opportunity economy, versus Trump and Vance, who are threatening to withdraw the dollars for these jobs,” Schor added, urging voters in Lansing and across the country to pay close attention as Election Day approaches.

The potential withdrawal of the funds could have wide-reaching consequences for Lansing, a city that has long relied on the auto industry to drive its economy. For now, the fate of this critical investment remains uncertain as Vance and other Republicans continue to weigh their stance on the grants.
