Soaking Weekend Ahead for South Florida with Rain, Flood Risks
Miami — Issued by the National Weather Service at 7:49 AM on October 6, 2024.
Heavy Rain Expected as Tropical Storm Milton Nears Florida
Flash Flood Watch Issued as Persistent Showers Drench Region
The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a Flood Watch for most of South Florida, predicting rainfall amounts of 2 to 4 inches, with isolated pockets of up to 6+ inches. Current radar data shows heavy rainbands entering the region from the Gulf of Mexico, impacting the Atlantic metro areas, including Miami, Fort Lauderdale, and West Palm Beach.
"The persistent bands of heavy showers could trigger flash flooding, especially in low-lying urban areas," said NWS officials. Tropical moisture and storm convergence will keep the region drenched through Sunday night into Monday.
Tropical Storm Milton Expected to Strengthen as It Approaches Landfall
While this initial round of heavy rainfall is not directly associated with Tropical Storm Milton, the storm's influence is expected to ramp up as it strengthens in the Gulf of Mexico. Forecasts suggest that Milton will reach hurricane strength before making landfall along Florida's west coast early next week. Areas along the Gulf Coast, including Collier County and Monroe County, should be on high alert for potential storm surge and significant wind impacts.
Widespread 5-8 Inches of Rain Expected by Midweek
The NWS expects even more rain to follow. As Milton approaches, widespread rainfall amounts between 5 to 8 inches are predicted for South Florida by midweek, with isolated areas possibly receiving up to 10 inches. Communities along the coast and inland metropolitan areas are advised to prepare for significant water accumulation and possible evacuation orders.
Coastal Communities Face High Risk of Rip Currents and Storm Surge
In addition to the rain, coastal areas face a high risk of rip currents. The NWS has issued a High Rip Current Risk warning for Palm Beach, with moderate risks extending to Miami and Broward beaches. Additionally, communities on the Gulf Coast are being warned about life-threatening storm surge that could accompany Tropical Storm Milton as it makes landfall.
