Federal Aid Mobilized for Florida Ahead of Hurricane Milton Landfall

WASHINGTON – President Joseph R. Biden, Jr. approved an emergency declaration for Florida today in response to the imminent threat posed by Hurricane Milton, which began impacting the state on October 5. The declaration authorizes FEMA to coordinate all disaster relief efforts and provide federal assistance to protect lives, property, and public health across the state as Milton strengthens and moves toward the Gulf Coast.

Under the emergency declaration, 75% federal funding will be allocated for emergency protective measures, including direct federal assistance for counties across Florida. This assistance will focus on alleviating the hardship and suffering caused by the hurricane and will be aimed at mitigating the threat of further catastrophe.

Federal Support Extended to Over 40 Counties in Florida

Emergency assistance will be provided to counties expected to bear the brunt of Hurricane Milton’s impact, including Brevard, Broward, Charlotte, Collier, Hillsborough, Lee, Manatee, Miami-Dade, Monroe, Palm Beach, Sarasota, and Pinellas. Other counties, such as Duval, Alachua, and Nassau, will also receive federal funding for emergency protective measures.

John E. Brogan has been named the Federal Coordinating Officer to lead the federal recovery operations across the affected regions.

The declaration comes as Hurricane Milton continues to intensify, threatening coastal communities with severe storm surges, damaging winds, and heavy rainfall. Residents in high-risk areas are urged to follow evacuation orders and stay informed through local officials and emergency services.
