Minnesota's Growing Season Ends Tonight: Say Goodbye to Your Garden!

Freeze Warning for Southern Minnesota tonight as temperatures drop below freezing. Expect warming temperatures with fire weather concerns later this week.

Sub-Freezing Temperatures Tonight, Warming Trend and Fire Weather Risk Coming by Midweek

TWIN CITIES — Issued by the National Weather Service at 2:46 AM on October 14, 2024.

Hard Freeze Expected Tonight for Southern Minnesota and Western Wisconsin

A Freeze Warning is in effect for Southern Minnesota as temperatures are expected to drop into the mid-20s to low 30s overnight. This will effectively bring an end to the growing season, as sub-freezing conditions are expected outside the Twin Cities Metro. Residents with any remaining sensitive vegetation are advised to take protective measures.

Colder Temperatures and Freeze Warnings Tonight

Tonight, clear skies and light winds will allow for efficient radiational cooling, causing temperatures to fall below freezing. This will be the first hard freeze of the season across southern Minnesota. Another widespread freeze is likely again on Wednesday morning, making it crucial to protect any remaining sensitive plants.

Warmer Weather and Fire Risks by Midweek

After a cold start to the week, temperatures will warm up by Wednesday as a high-pressure ridge builds across the Upper Midwest. Expect highs in the 60s by Thursday, with temperatures climbing to the mid-70s by Friday. Along with the warming trend, gusty winds up to 30 mph and very dry conditions could create fire weather concerns later in the week, especially with dry fuels in place.

    Weekend Rain Chances

The next chance for light rain arrives by next weekend, though it doesn’t appear to be a widespread soaking event. A frontal system will bring scattered rain showers to western Minnesota late Friday, with some showers spreading eastward by Saturday. While the rainfall amounts are expected to be light, any moisture will be welcome due to the ongoing dry conditions.
