Brr! Freezing Temperatures Tonight, But Kansas Heats Up Later This Week!

Freeze Watch for Northeast Kansas Tuesday night into Wednesday morning as temperatures drop below freezing. Expect warmer, windy conditions later in the week.

Sub-Freezing Temperatures Expected Early This Week, with Warm and Windy Weather Returning by Thursday

TOPEKA — Issued by the National Weather Service at 4:49 AM on October 14, 2024.

Freeze Watch in Effect for Tuesday Night Across Northeast Kansas

The National Weather Service has issued a Freeze Watch for Northeast Kansas from late Tuesday night through Wednesday morning. The coldest temperatures of the season are expected, with lows dropping below 32°F area-wide. Residents should take precautions to protect sensitive plants and outdoor items ahead of the freeze.

    Chilly Start to the Week

A surface ridge over northern Nebraska is sending a cool and dry air mass into Kansas, keeping skies clear and temperatures below average. Expect frost to develop in far northern Kansas this morning as temperatures hover in the low to mid 30s. Highs today will remain on the cooler side, with afternoon temperatures only reaching the low to mid 60s.

    • Tuesday's Highs: Struggling to reach 60°F.
    • Tuesday Night's Lows: Sub-freezing temperatures expected across much of the region.

Warmer, Windy Conditions and Elevated Fire Danger by Thursday

As the surface high moves east on Wednesday, a warming trend will begin. By Thursday, expect gusty southerly winds near advisory criteria, with wind gusts exceeding 30 mph. This, combined with dry conditions, will bring elevated fire weather concerns for the end of the week. Temperatures are expected to rebound, with highs in the mid-70s by Friday.

Precipitation Chances Remain Uncertain for the Weekend

While the next chance of rain is forecast for the weekend, models remain uncertain about the timing and amount of precipitation. Current projections show a closed low forming over the southwestern U.S., which could bring better chances for rain by early next week. Stay tuned for updates as the forecast evolves.
