Issued by the National Weather Service at 3:50 AM CDT on October 15, 2024.
Southern Wisconsin Braces for Freezing Temperatures Tonight
Rain showers will continue to affect the eastern parts of the state throughout the morning, especially near Lake Michigan. The strong northerly winds gusting up to 30 mph will persist through the day, gradually decreasing as high pressure approaches from the northwest.
While skies will begin to clear by late afternoon, temperatures will struggle to hit 50°F, keeping the region colder than usual for mid-October.
Frost and Freeze Expected Overnight
Tonight’s clear skies and diminishing winds will lead to widespread frost, especially in areas further from Lake Michigan. The Freeze Warning goes into effect across southern Wisconsin from 1 AM to 9 AM on Wednesday, October 16. Homeowners should take precautions to protect sensitive plants and outdoor pipes from freezing conditions.
Highs will rise only slightly tomorrow, with most areas remaining 5 degrees below average for this time of year. Another night of freezing temperatures is expected Wednesday night, bringing further risks for frost and freeze.
Waterspout Potential on Lake Michigan
The combination of cold air and lake effect showers also creates the potential for waterspouts over Lake Michigan today, a phenomenon that could continue into the evening. Boaters should exercise caution and stay updated on weather conditions.
