Gusty, Dusty, and Risky: Fire Warnings Blanket the Gulf Coast

Offshore winds raise red flag warnings—keep an eye on fire risks.

Coastal Alabama and Florida brace for fire risks and cooler weather as dry air and gusty winds move in. Red Flag Warnings in effect until evening.

[MOBILE] — Issued by the National Weather Service at 6:39 AM CDT on October 16, 2024.

Dry, Breezy Conditions and Cooler Temperatures Grip the Gulf Coast

Coastal Alabama, the Florida Panhandle, and parts of Mississippi will experience cooler temperatures and hazardous fire weather today. The NWS has issued Red Flag Warnings across southern Alabama, Florida, and Mississippi due to a combination of strong winds, dry air, and parched vegetation. Offshore winds are expected to diminish later today, but caution is urged as conditions remain ripe for wildfire spread.

Fire Risks and Cool Temperatures Persist into the Weekend

    • Today: Red Flag Warnings are in effect until 7 PM CDT, as gusty offshore winds combine with dry fuels and low humidity. Temperatures will remain cooler, with highs near 68-70°F and lows dipping into the 40s along the coast and upper 30s inland.
    • Thursday: Expect continued dry conditions with highs in the low 70s under clear skies. Overnight lows will range between 40-50°F.

Long-Range Forecast: Sunny and Warming Into the Weekend

A gradual warming trend begins on Friday with highs reaching the mid-70s. By early next week, temperatures will climb to 80°F or higher, providing ideal weather for outdoor activities—though fire risks may persist in dry areas.

Coastal Marine Hazards: Strong Winds and Rip Currents

A Gale Warning remains in effect for parts of the Gulf waters until 10 AM CDT today. A Small Craft Advisory follows, lasting until Thursday morning, with moderate to strong easterly winds keeping conditions hazardous for boaters. Rip current risks will also remain elevated along area beaches through the weekend.
