Bay Area Braces for High Winds and Extreme Fire Danger Starting Thursday

High winds and critically dry conditions increase fire danger across the San Francisco Bay Area starting Thursday night.

[SAN FRANCISCO, CA] — Issued by the National Weather Service at 9:31 PM PDT on October 16, 2024.

Red Flag Warning Brings Fire Danger to Bay Area Through Saturday Evening

The National Weather Service has issued a Red Flag Warning across the Bay Area and Central Coast from 11 PM Thursday to 5 PM Saturday. Strong offshore winds and extremely low humidity are expected to elevate fire risks across most of the region. North to northeast winds of 25-35 mph, with gusts up to 50 mph, will pose a threat of rapid fire spread.

The warning covers much of the San Francisco Peninsula, the North Bay Interior, and Santa Clara Valley, extending to the Santa Cruz Mountains and Monterey Bay. Ridgetops and higher terrain in the North Bay and Diablo Range could see isolated gusts reaching 65 mph.

Outdoor burning is discouraged, as any spark could ignite dry fuels, creating uncontrolled fire outbreaks. Even areas that experienced cooler and more humid conditions recently will dry out quickly under these persistent offshore winds.

Wind Advisory Adds to Fire Concerns Through Friday Evening

In addition to the fire risks, a Wind Advisory is in effect from 11 PM Thursday to 11 PM Friday. Expect strong north winds of 25 to 35 mph across the East Bay Hills and Santa Clara Hills, with gusts potentially reaching 50 mph. Loose objects may be blown around, and tree limbs could fall, increasing the chance of power outages. Residents should secure outdoor items and use caution when traveling, especially in high-profile vehicles.

Fire Conditions to Ease by Saturday Evening, But Vigilance is Advised

The Red Flag Warning will remain in place through Saturday afternoon, with winds expected to subside by Saturday evening. However, conditions may remain volatile, and residents are urged to stay alert for additional weather updates and fire-related advisories.
