New Mexico Weekend Washout: Floods, Snow, and Tornado Threats Loom

Heavy rainfall, severe weather, and snow expected across New Mexico through Sunday as a powerful storm system moves through the region.

Albuquerque — Issued by the National Weather Service at 11:41 PM MDT on October 18, 2024.

Major Weather Event with Rain, Severe Storms, and Snow Across New Mexico

A cool, wet weekend is unfolding across northern New Mexico as a powerful upper low stalls over northern Arizona, bringing waves of rain and even snow to higher elevations. The eastern plains are expected to receive the most rainfall, with several inches likely, increasing the risk of flash flooding in low-lying areas.

Heavy Rain and Severe Weather to Hit Eastern Plains

Rain began spreading into New Mexico on Friday night and will continue throughout the weekend, with the eastern plains bracing for the heaviest rainfall. Severe thunderstorms are expected in these areas, bringing gusty winds and heavy downpours. Some storms may produce isolated tornadoes and hail as storm bands intensify on Saturday. Rainfall amounts could reach up to 3-5 inches, increasing the flood risk.

    Snowfall Possible in High-Elevation Areas

Snow levels will drop to 7,000-8,000 feet in western New Mexico and the northern mountains. Locations above 10,000 feet may see several inches of snow, particularly in the Chama and Angel Fire areas. Travelers heading to higher elevations should be cautious of slick roads and changing conditions.

Short-Term Forecast: Flash Flooding and Severe Weather Risks

    • Saturday: Heavy rain and thunderstorms across the eastern plains; severe storms may develop in the afternoon.
    • Saturday Night: Additional rounds of rainfall with persistent gusty winds up to 40 mph in some areas.
    • Sunday: The system begins to weaken, but rain and isolated storms will continue in the eastern plains.

Temperatures will remain below seasonal averages, creating the coolest weather the state has seen so far this fall.
