Madison Braces for Elevated Fire Risk – Don’t Light That Grill Yet!

Warm, dry weather paired with gusty winds keeps fire risks elevated in areas west of Madison.

Breezy Days and Fire Risks Highlight Southern Wisconsin’s Forecast

MILWAUKEE, WI — Issued by the National Weather Service at 9:53 PM CDT on October 19, 2024.

Dry Conditions and Warm Temperatures Pose Fire Hazards Through Monday

The National Weather Service Milwaukee warns that dry weather and elevated fire conditions will continue into Sunday and Monday, especially along and west of the Interstate 39/90 corridor. A high-pressure system currently lingering over the region has resulted in warm and dry weather with temperatures expected to reach the upper 70s to low 80s by Sunday.

While humidity levels may climb to around 30% on Sunday, dry fuels, low dew points, and breezy southwesterly winds up to 20 knots will maintain the fire threat, especially in areas west of Madison, where drought indicators remain high.

Early Week Warmth, but Cooler Temperatures Ahead

High pressure is forecast to weaken by Monday, providing some relief from the gusty winds. However, the atmosphere will remain dry with low moisture recovery overnight. By Tuesday, a trough will pass through the Great Lakes Region, but precipitation chances remain minimal due to the lack of moisture. Cooler, near-normal temperatures are expected to return by midweek, signaling the end of the warm spell
