Wisconsin Is Warm and Dry Today, But Here’s When You’ll Need Your Rain Jacket

Southern Wisconsin faces elevated fire risks with warm, dry weather continuing. Rain and cooler temperatures are expected later in the week.

MILWAUKEE — Issued by the National Weather Service at 2:55 AM on October 21, 2024.

Fire Weather Concerns Rise with Near 80-Degree Highs

The unseasonably warm stretch continues today, with temperatures reaching near 80°F across southern Wisconsin. Despite lighter winds, the dry conditions and low humidity have elevated fire weather concerns, especially in the western part of the state.

Tuesday Brings Cold Front and a Chance of Showers

The warm, dry weather will hold through today under the influence of high pressure, but change is on the way as an upper-level ridge moves east and a cold front pushes in from central Canada. Tuesday’s forecast introduces breezy south-to-southwest winds ahead of the front, raising rain chances to 20-30% in parts of southern Wisconsin.

Forecast models suggest only light rainfall, if any, due to lingering dry air, with much of the region expected to remain dry.

Midweek Brings Cooler Air and Rain Later in the Week

After Tuesday’s front passes, high pressure will return briefly, keeping the area dry through most of Thursday. A second low-pressure system arriving Thursday night could provide the best chance of rain and even thunderstorms, as increased moisture and instability are expected to develop.

Behind this system, temperatures will cool into the 50s over the weekend, with northwest winds bringing a crisp, autumn-like feel to the region.

Marine Conditions: Winds Shift as Front Passes

South-to-southwest winds will continue over Lake Michigan today, becoming gusty on Tuesday as the cold front approaches. A northwesterly wind shift is expected by Wednesday, and gusts in northern Lake Michigan could briefly reach gale force. Lighter winds are forecasted to return by the weekend as high pressure builds back in.
