The National Weather Service (NWS) in Pocatello has issued a Red Flag Warning for the East Salmon River Mountains and the Lemhi and Lost River Range, covering Salmon National Forest and Challis National Forest. This warning, which remains in effect until 9 PM MDT Monday, July 29, 2024, is due to gusty winds and low relative humidity, creating a high potential for wildfire growth and intensity.

On Monday, winds are expected to reach speeds of 10 to 20 mph, with gusts up to 35 mph. Relative humidity levels may drop as low as 12%, further increasing the fire risk. The NWS advises that these conditions could lead to rapid expansion of any new or existing fires.

The warning extends into Tuesday, July 30, from noon until 9 PM MDT, due to anticipated scattered thunderstorms. These storms could cover 25 to 50% of the affected areas and bring gusty, erratic winds ranging from 30 to 40 mph. The presence of frequent lightning associated with these storms could significantly increase the likelihood of new wildfire starts.

In addition to the fire weather concerns, the Idaho Department of Environmental Quality has issued an Air Quality Advisory for Butte and Custer Counties, effective until 10 AM MDT Tuesday. Due to wildfire smoke, the air quality index is forecasted to be "Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups." Residents, especially children, the elderly, and those with respiratory issues, are advised to limit prolonged or strenuous outdoor activities. Open burning is currently prohibited to help mitigate air quality concerns.

Authorities urge residents and visitors to remain vigilant, adhere to safety guidelines, and stay informed through local news and weather updates.
