St. Ignace, Mich. - The annual Mackinac Bridge Walk, a cherished tradition since 1958, is set to introduce a new starting point for participants beginning from the St. Ignace side in 2024. The Mackinac Bridge Authority (MBA) announced that the walk will now commence from Bridge View Park, located on the west side of I-75. This change aims to enhance the safety and convenience of the thousands of participants expected to join the event on Labor Day, September 2, 2024.

    Rationale Behind the New Location

Traditionally, the walk began near the MBA administration building, but this setup required participants to cross the interstate, creating potential safety concerns. MBA Bridge Director Kim Nowack explained that the majority of participants already park at Bridge View Park, making it a logical choice for the new starting point. "Far more parking is available in Bridge View Park, and there is also more room for gathering before the start of the event," Nowack stated. "Starting the walk from that side of I-75 will be more convenient and safer for most participants."

    Enhanced Accessibility and Safety Measures

The 2024 Bridge Walk will continue to offer flexibility by allowing participants to start from either St. Ignace or Mackinaw City. This arrangement eliminates the need for busing, as walkers can choose their starting point based on where they park their vehicles. The MBA has released a detailed video on their website, www.MackinacBridge.org/Walk, outlining the various options available to walkers.

    Participants have three primary options:

    1. Midpoint Turnaround: Start from either end, walk to the midpoint, then return to the original side. This option requires walkers to be on the side they wish to return to by 10 a.m.
    2. Full Bridge Walk: Complete the entire length of the bridge. Walkers choosing this option must reach the midpoint before 10 a.m. and arrange their own transportation back after the bridge reopens at noon.
    3. Double Back: Walk to the opposite side and return. Like the midpoint turnaround, walkers must reach the midpoint by 10 a.m. on their return trip to avoid being turned back.

The bridge will be closed to public traffic from 6:30 a.m. to noon on the day of the event, based on recommendations from the Michigan State Police and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. However, emergency vehicles will still be permitted to cross.

A Legacy of Community and Participation

The Mackinac Bridge Walk has been a symbol of unity and community spirit, drawing participants from across the country. The 2024 event marks the 66th iteration of this iconic walk, with the only interruption occurring in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Recent years have seen participation numbers ranging from 20,000 to 35,000, with the 2023 event attracting 35,000 walkers.

The MBA encourages all participants to plan their transportation in advance, as no shuttle services will be provided by the MBA, and outside shuttle availability cannot be guaranteed. The emphasis on safety and self-sufficiency highlights the event's commitment to providing a secure and enjoyable experience for all attendees.
