Tropical Wave Threatens South Florida with Heavy Rain and Potential Flooding

    2024-08-02

    Scattered Thunderstorms Tonight

The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a Hazardous Weather Outlook for South Florida, warning of scattered thunderstorms tonight. These storms are expected primarily over Southwest Florida, with the possibility of gusty winds and heavy downpours.

Increasing Rain Chances Over the Weekend

From Friday through Wednesday, rain chances will increase significantly as a tropical wave approaches the region. This tropical wave, currently near Hispaniola, is expected to move into the southeastern Gulf of Mexico by late weekend. The National Hurricane Center has given this tropical wave a high chance of development in the coming days.

    Potential for Localized Flooding

The NWS warns that the strongest storms this weekend could produce gusty winds, frequent lightning, and heavy downpours. Multiple rounds of these heavy downpours could lead to localized flooding, particularly on Saturday and Sunday. Minor coastal flooding may also occur along the Gulf Coast during high tide on Sunday.

    Hazardous Marine Conditions

Marine conditions are expected to deteriorate over the weekend, with hazardous conditions likely developing over the Atlantic and Gulf waters as winds and seas increase. Mariners are advised to exercise caution.

    High Heat Indices

Heat indices will remain near or above advisory thresholds through Friday, adding another layer of weather-related challenges for the region.

    Hydrologic Outlook: Heavy Rainfall Expected

A Hydrologic Outlook from the NWS highlights the potential for heavy rainfall this weekend into early next week. As the tropical wave moves closer, deep tropical moisture will flow into South Florida, pushing PWAT values to between 2.1 and 2.4 inches. These levels are near the maximum for this time of year, raising concerns about significant rainfall. Rainfall totals could reach 1 to 3 inches in the eastern part of South Florida and 2 to 4 inches in the western part, with higher amounts possible in areas where storms repeatedly pass.

Residents are urged to stay informed about the latest weather updates as the situation develops. A Flood Watch may be issued if forecast confidence increases regarding the tropical feature’s impact.
