NWS Issues Hazardous Weather Outlook and Flood Advisory

Detroit, MIThe National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a Hazardous Weather Outlook and a Flood Advisory for southeast Michigan, covering multiple counties. Residents are urged to stay informed and take necessary precautions as thunderstorms and heavy rainfall are expected to impact the region.

    Thunderstorm Threat Tonight

The Hazardous Weather Outlook forecasts scattered thunderstorms mainly after 8 PM today. These storms may produce heavy downpours and isolated downburst winds of up to 50 mph. The storm mode is expected to be pulse or multicell clusters, moving from southwest to northeast at 20 mph. Residents should be prepared for sudden weather changes and stay indoors during thunderstorms.

    Friday's Weather Forecast

The outlook for Friday indicates scattered to numerous thunderstorms with locally heavy rainfall being the primary threat. Rainfall totals could exceed 1 inch in some areas, potentially causing minor flooding in urban locations. It is important to monitor weather updates and be aware of flooding risks, especially in low-lying areas.

Flood Advisory for Macomb and Oakland Counties

A Flood Advisory is in effect until 5 AM EDT for Macomb and Oakland counties due to excessive rainfall from thunderstorms. Doppler radar has indicated that 2 to 2.5 inches of rain have already fallen, with additional amounts of 0.5 to 1 inch possible. Urban and small stream flooding is expected, affecting cities such as Warren, Troy, Southfield, and Pontiac.

Residents are advised to avoid flooded roads and exercise caution, especially at night when it is harder to recognize flood dangers. Most flood-related deaths occur in vehicles, so it is crucial to "turn around, don’t drown."

    Precautionary Measures

    • Stay indoors during thunderstorms.
    • Avoid driving on flooded roads.
    • Monitor local weather updates.
    • Check on vulnerable individuals, such as the elderly and those with chronic health conditions.
