Heavy Rainfall Expected to Cause Significant Flooding

The National Weather Service in Columbia, SC, has issued a Flood Watch for parts of east-central Georgia and central South Carolina. The watch is in effect until 8 PM EDT this evening due to anticipated excessive rainfall.

    Areas Under Watch

The Flood Watch includes the following regions:

    • East-Central Georgia: McDuffie, Columbia, Richmond, and Burke counties.
    • Central South Carolina: Aiken, Bamberg, Barnwell, Calhoun, Central Orangeburg, Clarendon, Kershaw, Lee, Lexington, Northwestern Orangeburg, Richland, Southeastern Orangeburg, and Sumter counties.

    Weather Conditions

    • Forecast: Showers and thunderstorms are expected to develop throughout the day, bringing locally heavy rainfall to the region.
    • Impact: With nearly saturated soils from previous rainfall, the additional precipitation will increase the risk of flooding in rivers, creeks, streams, and other low-lying areas.

    Potential Flooding Impacts

    Residents should be prepared for:

    • Flooding of rivers, creeks, and streams.
    • Flood-prone areas experiencing significant water accumulation.
    • Impassable roads and hazardous driving conditions.

    Precautionary and Preparedness Actions

To ensure safety during this Flood Watch, the National Weather Service recommends:

    • Monitoring Forecasts: Keep up to date with the latest weather forecasts and be alert for potential Flood Warnings.
    • Preparedness: If you live in areas prone to flooding, be prepared to take action should flooding occur. This includes having an evacuation plan and emergency supplies ready.
    • Avoid Driving Through Floodwaters: Remember the phrase "Turn Around, Don’t Drown!" Do not attempt to drive through flooded roadways.

    Community Support and Resources

Local authorities may provide additional resources and information on flood preparedness. Residents are encouraged to stay informed through local news updates and the National Weather Service for any changes or additional advisories.

By taking these precautions and staying informed, residents can mitigate the risks associated with this heavy rainfall and potential flooding.
