Lansing, MI - In a significant move to enhance convenience and customer service, Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson announced that residents can now transfer vehicle titles online via Michigan.gov/SOS. This new service marks another milestone in Benson’s mission to provide easier and faster options for Michigan residents to complete their transactions without visiting branch offices.

    Secretary Benson's Statement

"Since taking office, one of my highest priorities has been to provide convenient options for Michigan residents to complete their transactions without needing to come into a branch office,” said Secretary Benson. “I’m proud that we’ve reached another milestone toward that goal with a new, faster online option to transfer vehicle titles. We will never stop working to provide excellent customer service to every Michigan resident."

    How the Service Works

To utilize the new online title transfer service, both the buyer and seller must possess a valid Michigan driver’s license or state ID and meet specific criteria:

    • Have a current Michigan paper title (electronic titles are not eligible).
    • The vehicle must be a car, minivan, SUV, motorcycle, pickup, or van.
    • There must be one individual seller to one individual buyer.
    • The vehicle cannot be financed by the buyer.

Additional eligibility checks will be conducted during the transaction to ensure the vehicle qualifies for an online title transfer. Essential documentation includes the signed title, an odometer disclosure statement, and a statement from the loan provider if applicable. Proof of a valid Michigan No-Fault insurance policy is also required for vehicle registration.

    Fees and Processing Time

Title and transfer fees apply, and residents can calculate their registration fee estimates on Michigan.gov/SOS. The online title transfer process can take up to three business days for approval.

    Impact of Online Services

Since Secretary Benson assumed office in January 2019, the Michigan Department of State has significantly expanded its online services. The number of transactions completed online has increased from 28% to 60%, reducing the need for office visits and cutting wait times from several hours to an average of 20 minutes or less.

    Conclusion

The introduction of online vehicle title transfers is a testament to Secretary Benson’s commitment to improving customer service and making state services more accessible. This new service will undoubtedly save Michigan residents time and enhance their overall experience with the Department of State.
