Heavy Rainfall, Flash Flooding, and Hazardous Beach Conditions Expected

Milwaukee, WI – The National Weather Service (NWS) in Milwaukee/Sullivan has issued multiple alerts for southeast Wisconsin, warning residents of severe weather conditions, including heavy rainfall, flash flooding, and hazardous beach conditions. The advisories were issued at 9:24 PM CDT on Monday, August 5, 2024, and remain in effect through Tuesday morning.

    Severe Thunderstorm Watch

A Severe Thunderstorm Watch is in effect until midnight tonight for Iowa, Lafayette, Green, and Rock counties. Isolated to scattered thunderstorms with severe winds and large hail are possible in these areas. Residents should be prepared for sudden and severe weather changes and take shelter if necessary.

Flood Watch and Flash Flooding Risk

A Flood Watch is in effect until 7 AM CDT Tuesday for several counties, including Marquette, Green Lake, Fond du Lac, Sheboygan, Sauk, Columbia, Dodge, Iowa, and Dane. The NWS warns of potential flash flooding due to excessive rainfall expected to continue overnight into Tuesday morning.

    • Areas Affected: The watch covers portions of east-central, south-central, and southeast Wisconsin.
    • Rainfall: Several hours of moderate to heavy rainfall rates are anticipated, increasing the risk of flooding in rivers, creeks, streams, and low-lying areas.
    • Impacts: Urban areas with poor drainage are particularly vulnerable to flooding. Residents should avoid driving through flooded roads and be cautious of rising water levels.

    Hazardous Beach Conditions

A Beach Hazard Statement is in effect for all Lake Michigan beaches through Tuesday night due to high waves and onshore winds, creating a high swim risk. Swimming in these conditions can be extremely dangerous, and beachgoers are advised to stay out of the water.

    Precautionary Measures

    • Stay Informed: Monitor local weather updates and alerts from reliable sources.
    • Avoid Flooded Areas: Do not drive through flooded roads and avoid low-lying areas that are prone to flooding.
    • Beach Safety: Stay out of the water at Lake Michigan beaches and heed warnings about hazardous swimming conditions.
    • Prepare for Severe Weather: Secure outdoor items and be ready to take shelter in case of severe thunderstorms.

    Spotter Information

The NWS encourages spotters to report any incidents of wind gusts or hail to assist with monitoring and response efforts.
