Flash Flooding and Hazardous Beach Conditions Prompt Warnings

Green Bay, WI – The National Weather Service (NWS) in Green Bay has issued a Hazardous Weather Outlook for north-central and northeast Wisconsin, warning residents of potential heavy rainfall, localized flooding, and hazardous beach conditions. The advisory was released at 2:57 PM CDT on Monday, August 5, 2024, and remains in effect through Tuesday morning.

    Weather Conditions Tonight

Residents south of Highway 29 should prepare for thunderstorms tonight. While severe storms are not expected, locally heavy rain may lead to urban and small stream flooding, localized flash flooding, and basement flooding. The affected areas include:

    • Counties: Vilas, Oneida, Forest, Florence, Northern Marinette, Lincoln, Langlade, Menominee, Northern Oconto, Door, Marathon, Shawano, Wood, Portage, Waupaca, Outagamie, Brown, Kewaunee, Waushara, Winnebago, Calumet, Manitowoc, Southern Marinette, and Southern Oconto.
    • Key Cities: Green Bay, Appleton, Oshkosh, Manitowoc, and surrounding communities.

    Hazardous Beach Conditions

High waves and strong currents will create dangerous swimming conditions at Lake Michigan beaches south of Sturgeon Bay tonight and through late Tuesday morning. The NWS advises beachgoers to stay out of the water to avoid the risk of drowning due to the strong currents and high waves.

    Extended Weather Concerns

    • Tuesday Morning: A few non-severe thunderstorms may persist, primarily south of Highway 29.
    • Midweek: Rivers and creeks are expected to rise through the middle of the week, potentially leading to further flooding concerns.

    Safety and Preparedness Tips

    • Stay Informed: Keep updated with local weather forecasts and alerts from reliable sources.
    • Avoid Flooded Areas: Do not drive through flooded roads and avoid areas prone to flooding.
    • Beach Safety: Stay out of the water at Lake Michigan beaches during hazardous conditions.
    • Report Flooding: Spotters are requested to report any flooding incidents to the National Weather Service in Green Bay to assist with monitoring and response efforts.
