LANSING, MI — Michigan’s commitment to ensuring that all public school children have access to nutritious meals continues for the 2024-2025 school year. Thanks to a $200 million appropriation in the fiscal year 2025 School Aid budget, signed by Governor Gretchen Whitmer, the popular Michigan School Meals program will remain in place, benefiting 1.4 million students.

    Sustaining a Successful Program

The Michigan School Meals program, which began in the 2023-24 school year, has been instrumental in providing free meals to all public school children. Last year alone, the program served over 76.3 million breakfasts and 135.6 million lunches, significantly contributing to the health and well-being of students across the state.

“We are excited that public schools in Michigan can continue to offer all students free, healthy meals in their buildings during the upcoming school year,” said State Superintendent Dr. Michael F. Rice. “The Michigan School Meals program fosters successful student learning and aligns with Goal 3 of Michigan’s Top 10 Strategic Education Plan to improve the health, safety, and wellness of all learners.”

    Funding and Support

The program’s funding ensures state reimbursement for schools providing free breakfast and lunch to students participating in the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National School Lunch Program and School Breakfast Program. This initiative not only supports student health but also relieves financial pressure on families, eliminating the stigma associated with free meal programs.

Moreover, the Michigan School Meals program supports local agriculture through the 10 Cents a Meal initiative. This state-funded program encourages schools to purchase Michigan-grown fruits, vegetables, and dry beans, offering an additional 10 cents per meal when local produce is served. This initiative has dual benefits: it enhances the nutritional value of school meals and supports Michigan’s agricultural economy.

    Impact on Families and Schools

The provision of free school meals has far-reaching benefits. It helps alleviate financial burdens on Michigan families, ensuring that all children have access to nutritious food, which is crucial for their physical and cognitive development. Additionally, by removing the need for payment, the program eliminates the negative stigma that can be associated with receiving free meals.

Although the meals are free, families are encouraged to complete family income forms. This information is vital as it helps local schools qualify for additional educational funding, further supporting the overall educational infrastructure.

    Looking Forward

As Michigan enters the 2024-2025 school year, the continuation of the Michigan School Meals program stands as a testament to the state’s dedication to fostering a healthy, supportive, and inclusive educational environment.
