Torrential Rain and Tornadoes Forecasted to Hit Virginia

Wakefield, VAThe National Weather Service has issued urgent weather alerts for central and southeastern Virginia as the region faces potentially severe conditions, including heavy rainfall, flash flooding, and tornadoes. The hazardous weather is expected to persist through Friday evening, with the most critical period being overnight Thursday into Friday morning.

    Flood Watch in Effect

The Flood Watch, which was initially issued on Thursday afternoon, remains in effect until Friday evening. The alert covers a wide area including cities such as Richmond, Colonial Heights, and Emporia. Excessive rainfall is likely to result in flash flooding across low-lying and flood-prone locations. Residents are advised to monitor local conditions and be prepared for potential Flood Warnings as the situation evolves.

"Excessive runoff may result in flooding of rivers, creeks, streams, and other low-lying and flood-prone locations," the NWS warned. The public is encouraged to stay informed through NOAA Weather Radio or the NWS website.

Tornado Watch Until 7 AM Friday

A Tornado Watch has also been issued for parts of Virginia, including Richmond, Norfolk, and Virginia Beach. This watch remains in effect until 7 AM EDT Friday. The storm system moving through the area is expected to produce strong straight-line winds and isolated tornadoes. The threat of severe weather is heightened during the overnight hours, making it imperative for residents to have a reliable method of receiving alerts while asleep.

    Preparations and Safety

Residents in the affected areas are urged to take precautions, including securing outdoor objects, staying indoors, and avoiding travel unless absolutely necessary. Those living in flood-prone areas should be especially vigilant, as rising water levels can occur rapidly.

The NWS has emphasized the unpredictability of these weather systems, urging residents to remain prepared and informed as conditions can change swiftly.
