Tropical Storm Debby Remnants to Bring Torrential Downpours

State College, PACentral Pennsylvania is under a Flood Watch from early Friday morning through late Friday night as the remnants of Tropical Storm Debby move through the region. The National Weather Service (NWS) in State College has issued a warning for potentially severe weather, including widespread heavy rainfall, flash flooding, and the possibility of fast-moving severe thunderstorms.

    Flooding Threatened by Heavy Rainfall

The Flood Watch, effective from 2 AM EDT Friday, covers a large swath of central Pennsylvania, including counties such as Centre, Lycoming, and Franklin. Rainfall totals of 3 to 5 inches are expected, with isolated areas potentially receiving up to 7 inches. The heavy rain is likely to lead to flooding in low-lying areas, poor drainage zones, small streams, and even along some larger rivers by Friday night into Saturday morning.

"Excessive runoff may result in flooding of rivers, creeks, streams, and other low-lying and flood-prone locations," the NWS warned. Residents in flood-prone areas are urged to remain vigilant and be prepared to take action should flooding develop.

    Severe Thunderstorms and Tornado Risk

In addition to the flood threat, there is a potential for fast-moving strong to severe thunderstorms throughout Friday. These storms could produce damaging winds and isolated tornadoes, further exacerbating the dangerous weather conditions in the region.

The NWS encourages residents to stay informed through NOAA Weather Radio or the NWS website for the latest updates and warnings. Spotters are also encouraged to report any significant hazardous weather conditions as they occur.

    Preparation and Safety

With the potential for severe flooding and dangerous storms, it is crucial for residents in central Pennsylvania to take precautionary measures. Ensure that you have a reliable way to receive weather alerts, especially during the overnight hours. Prepare to move to higher ground if flooding occurs and avoid driving through flooded roadways.
