Heavy Rain Expected Through Friday as Storm Moves North

Pittsburgh, PA The National Weather Service (NWS) in Pittsburgh has issued a Hazardous Weather Outlook for western Pennsylvania and northern West Virginia due to the remnants of Tropical Storm Debby, which are forecasted to bring heavy rain and an increased risk of flooding to the region from Thursday night through Friday.

Flooding Potential Due to Tropical Storm Debby

The storm system, which is moving north into eastern Pennsylvania, is expected to cause significant rainfall across the affected areas, raising concerns about flooding in low-lying areas and along small streams and rivers. The NWS warns that the heaviest rainfall is likely to occur overnight Thursday into Friday, with the potential for continued flooding through the day on Friday.

"The remnants of Tropical Storm Debby will drift north into Eastern Pennsylvania tonight, with the potential for flooding rain beginning later tonight and lasting through Friday," the NWS stated. The continued presence of the storm’s remnants will keep the region under the threat of flooding until the system fully passes.

    Precautionary Measures and Safety Tips

Residents in the affected areas, particularly those in flood-prone zones, are urged to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions. This includes monitoring local weather updates and preparing for the possibility of rapidly rising water levels. If flooding occurs, avoid driving through flooded roadways, as even shallow water can be dangerous.

The NWS encourages weather spotters to report significant weather conditions in accordance with Standard Operating Procedures, as their observations can provide critical information during this weather event.

    What to Expect

As the storm progresses, the region can expect periods of heavy rain, particularly overnight and into the early morning hours on Friday. The risk of flooding is particularly high in areas with poor drainage and near smaller streams that could quickly rise in response to the intense rainfall. While the exact amount of rainfall will vary, the cumulative impact could lead to dangerous conditions in some areas.
