Small Craft Advisories and Waterspout Threats for Lake Huron

Detroit, MIThe National Weather Service (NWS) in Detroit/Pontiac has issued a Hazardous Weather Outlook for portions of Lake Erie, Lake Huron, and Lake St. Clair, warning of potentially dangerous conditions through the weekend. The alert, which came into effect this afternoon, highlights the risk of isolated thunderstorms and the potential for waterspouts over Lake Huron tonight and into Sunday.

Small Craft Advisories Remain in Effect

Boaters are urged to exercise caution as small craft advisories remain in place for the affected waters. The advisories warn of potentially hazardous conditions for smaller vessels, particularly on Lake Huron, where strong winds and choppy waters are expected.

Waterspouts and Thunderstorms Could Pose Additional Dangers

The NWS also warns that isolated thunderstorms may develop tonight and on Sunday over Lake Huron. These storms bring the added risk of waterspouts, which are tornado-like phenomena that form over water and can pose significant threats to both boaters and those onshore. Waterspouts are most likely to occur during periods of unstable weather, such as the conditions expected this weekend.

Boaters and Residents Urged to Stay Informed

While spotter activation is not anticipated, the NWS encourages boaters and residents along the Great Lakes to stay updated on the latest forecasts and advisories. The hazardous weather conditions are expected to persist through Sunday, with improvements possible later in the week.
